Zirconia has been used in hip and knee replacement joints for decades due to its durability. For dental implants, zirconia performs equally well under the forces of chewing and grinding, and is designed to last a lifetime with proper care.
Can zirconia implants replace multiple teeth or a full arch?
Yes. Zirconia implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or support a full-arch restoration (such as an All-on-4 or All-on-6 solution using ceramic implants). How long does the zirconia implant process take?
The complete process typically takes 3–6 months from implant placement to final crown. The healing phase (osseointegration — where the implant bonds to the jawbone) takes approximately 3–4 months. After that, the ceramic crown is placed in one to two appointments. We use PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) from your own blood to accelerate healing and reduce discomfort.
Can I replace my old titanium implants with zirconia?
In many cases, yes. If you have existing titanium implants that are causing sensitivity, aesthetic concerns (dark gumline), or you simply want to transition to a fully metal-free mouth, Dr. Horiyat can evaluate whether replacement is appropriate. This typically involves removing the existing implant and placing a zirconia one after adequate healing. A 3D CBCT scan is required to assess bone condition first.

Coverage varies by plan. Many PPO dental plans include partial coverage for implants, though zirconia is sometimes classified differently than titanium by insurers.
